Editor’s Note: We’re excited to announce that RelativityOne’s integration with Cellebrite Endpoint Inspector and Mobile Now, which first launched in the United States in 2024, is now available in the UK. To celebrate and share more about this news, we’ve updated this article we published for the original launch.
In July 2024, we first announced our strategic partnership with Cellebrite—aimed at helping our teams reshape the world of mobile data in e-discovery for our customers. Cellebrite has been a long-time leader in mobile data solutions, offering a wide range of forensic products.
By integrating Cellebrite’s Endpoint Inspector and Mobile Now tools with RelativityOne's robust end-to-end collection, processing, and review capabilities, we set out to build innovative solutions that will drastically improve how mobile evidence is managed for legal data use cases.
Why Mobile Data is a Thorn in Legal’s Side
Our work extends far beyond the confines of our computers. These days, a simple project may require collaboration on email, via text message and other messaging platforms, on the phone, on video calls, and more. Phones have become a key part of the average employee's workflow as the way we work has become more dynamic and flexible. The proliferation of mobile data will only keep growing from here.
Indeed, a recent report from Cellebrite found that of corporations surveyed, 91 percent collected data from mobile devices, which was the second most popular device following computers (at 95 percent).
But the report also found a chorus of comments on the same common challenges that come with these types of collections:
- Intrusive, work-disrupting collection methodologies. When someone must physically take a device from its user to initiate a data collection, these projects become frustrating and time-consuming for legal teams and custodians alike.
- Ballooning data volumes and related privacy concerns. Targeted collections can be more complicated than they should, and over-collecting has serious impacts on project scale and user privacy.
- Cybersecurity concerns. Protecting the security of data during e-discovery is paramount, as it’s often highly sensitive. However, unique spoliation and chain of custody challenges plague mobile collections in particular.
We’ve also heard from our mobile advisory board that mobile collections processes tend to vary wildly from organization to organization. All told, these complexities make mobile devices as frustrating as they are essential to today’s legal data projects.
What We’ve Built So Far
Our partnership with Cellebrite is aimed at helping our customers tackle each of these concerns consistently and effectively.
Throughout the last year, we’ve worked with Cellebrite to deliver new enhancements to how you can collect, process, and review mobile data, including:
- Minimal custodian impact: Submit collection requests for mobile devices remotely. This streamlined process keeps work moving while allowing custodians to hold on to their devices.
- Remote collection from anywhere: Initiate and manage mobile device collections directly within RelativityOne. Whether your custodians are down the hall or across the globe, you can start a collection in minutes. Skip the shipping, travel, and coordination hassles of on-site collections.
- Targeted collections: Limit what you extract from Cellebrite’s forensic image to ensure only the most relevant data is processed, reducing noise and speeding up ECA and review.
- Near-instant access to review-ready data: Automatically transfer collected data to RelativityOne and convert chats into Relativity Short Message Format (RSMF), so you can quickly start reviewing messages in their near-native format.
Our goal is to make collecting, processing, and reviewing mobile data as easy and efficient as possible. These enhancements help you gather the right data quickly, without disrupting custodians or dealing with the headaches of overcollection. Plus, with remote collections, you can collect from custodians anywhere, reducing the need for on-site teams or shipping forensic kits. We’re focused on simplifying these workflows so you can spend less time on the process and more on what really matters.
