Relativity Inclusion Diversity Belonging Report 2023

IDB Report 2023
Our Commitment to an Inclusive Culture

At Relativity, we’re creating a culture where every individual feels respected, represented, and empowered. Where the voices of our community are not just heard, but deeply valued. Weaving Inclusion, Diversity & Belonging into every facet of our business takes consistent dedication and intention. See the strides we’ve made in 2023.

From Promise to Progress

We’ve spent the past several years increasing representation across three groups that are traditionally underrepresented in tech. Something we’ll continue into 2024 and beyond.

2023 Black/African American Headcount (US)
7.3%

2023 Hispanic/Latino Headcount (US)
6.6%

2023 Women Headcount (Global)
33.7%
Data for each year is as of December 31. Source: Workday.

We’re working toward equitable pay for everyone, everywhere.

As of March 2024, there are no statistically significant differences in pay across gender globally*, or race and ethnicity in the US.
* Pay equity review conducted by reviewing comparable roles across operating countries with at least 35 active employees

Inclusion, Diversity, and Belonging by the Years

  • We launch our first social impact program: Relativity Gives.

The program empowers Relativians to support their local communities. We’ve since committed over $3 million to the program.

  • A group of women at Relativity creates our first Community Resource Group (CRG).

Relativity Women of the Workplace was the start of something big. Today, our eight CRGs are the fabric of our culture.

  • We expand our domestic partner benefits.

We added same-sex partners and their children to the mix to better represent our employee base.

  • Relativity Gives crosses the pond.

Our EMEA team gets the resources they need to support their local communities.

  • A team of Relativians stands up the initial framework for Diversity and Inclusion at Relativity.

The framework includes plans for education, advocacy, and current-state assessments to inform strategy.

  • We invest in dedicated resources and roles to support Inclusion, Diversity, and Belonging (IDB) across the company.

Regular IDB meetups and an educational series on allyship are just the beginning.

  • We establish several new IDB initiatives.

The list includes new IDB courses, an Inclusive Action Council, and a review of our talent processes to help eliminate bias.

  • We integrate IDB experts into every vertical of our HR and talent teams.

With greater representation, we can ensure we’re creating a more inclusive experience for all Relativians, everywhere.

  • We launched a cohort of 12 women in Own Your Career in February.

Our Future Women Leaders in Engineering Incubator Program equips women with tools to further develop their leadership skills and explore technical and people management paths in engineering.

Building a community that fosters belonging

Our Workplace

Assessing our culture

To ensure our IDB efforts are being allocated properly, we partner with respected organizations in the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) space to assess our processes, culture, and policies. In 2023, these partners benchmarked our DEI maturity against other organizations and helped us prioritize our efforts to make the most impact.

Inclusion, brick by brick

Building an inclusive workspace that is attentive to team members from all communities, backgrounds, and experiences takes consistency. Our eight Community Resource Groups (CRGs) regularly celebrate and create awareness around their communities, and our storytelling program, Culture Collective, inspires Relativians to act and think differently with discussions on topics like mental health, resiliency, leadership, and more.

Bridging perspectives

We’ve expanded to include executives in our quarterly CRG Townhalls, which have been a great opportunity for historically underrepresented groups to share diverse perspectives directly to leadership, ask questions, and brainstorm new ideas of how to continue making an impact within their groups.

Creating space for humanity

In an effort for employees to feel seen, heard, and validated, our CRG for mental health, RelMIND, offers Safe Spaces. Held quarterly at minimum, these are open discussions to decompress and share feelings with no agenda, no expectations and no judgement. In 2023, additional sessions were scheduled as needed for support during ongoing crises in our world.

Progressing, together

We’re investing time, education, and a bit of humility, into our own workplace. Since 2020, we’ve been developing training programs to help our people check their biases, lead with inclusion first, and strengthen IDB at Relativity.

From the inside, out

We believe that a culture of inclusion starts from within, which is why in 2023, we improved our Short Term Disability Policy to cover 100% of earnings.

Our Workforce

Helping Everyone Succeed

We don’t guess at what our employees want – we ask them. In 2023, our team requested more development opportunities, so we widened our program offerings:

  • We expanded the McKinsey Management Accelerator Program, with customized content relevant to Black, African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Asian leaders. This six-month program enhances participants’ problem-solving and business skills to help them grow at Relativity – or wherever else their career takes them.
  • This year, RelMentors hosted a cohort of 46 participants and the program continues to help underrepresented Relativians build their careers and create more meaningful connections.
"I was honored to take part in the Management Accelerator Program and to be recognized as someone with the potential to be a future leader. I can confidently say that the learning provided helped me achieve higher performance than ever before."

Talent Pathways

In 2023, we introduced Talent Pathways, a new framework designed to expand economic opportunity for underrepresented talent by creating tangible paths to success within the technology and e-discovery industries through internships, apprenticeships, and more.

  • This year, Talent Pathways piloted SkillBridge, a program for service members who have retired from military careers and are transitioning to the private sector.
"Being a SkillBridge intern has bridged the gap of my soft and hard skills, making me a more competitive candidate and increasing my self-assurance in my abilities to excel post service. SkillBridge has played a critical role in my transition to a civilian career, offering the skills, network, and confidence needed to thrive."

  • Under this new framework, we’re continuing our existing investment in Relativity Fellows which aims to find, certify, and place untapped talent in career launching roles within the technology and e-discovery fields.
Since 2020, Relativity Fellows has had...
30
graduates from the program
24
graduates that started full-time work at Relativity after graduation
6
graduates that started full-time work with two of Relativity's partners (Lighthouse and BlueStar)

We’re distributing opportunity

Our talent acquisition initiatives extend beyond recruitment efforts. Our aim is not just to attract top talent but also to empower cultural support and enhance inclusion across all levels of our organization. To achieve this, we've empowered our recruiters and employees by providing opportunities to participate in a variety of events throughout the year. These events serve as a platform for engaging and connecting with over 250 qualified candidates from prominent conferences like RenderATL, Women In Tech, Latina in Tech, DevOps Chicago, and DevOps Poland.

We’re tracking our diversity

We leverage a hiring dashboard which helps managers track key metrics including how diverse our pipeline is throughout the hiring process.

We’re considering all education levels

We value both experience and education, and therefore, will not exclude candidates based on education alone. We removed education as a job requirement and also limited the minimum qualification on the job description to three years to broaden our talent pool even more.

Our Communities

Creating more access to justice

In 2020, we set out to make justice more accessible to the people who need it most. By the end of 2023, we had 118 active matters in Justice for Change. We will continue to put our tech into the hands of justice-focused organizations.

Putting IDB on our global stage

We’ve come a long way since Relativity Fest 2018 where we first introduced inclusivity with the addition of a parents’ room, prayer room, and pronoun ribbons. Now, IDB is a key conversation at the conference and we’re anticipating continued growth. In 2023, our Community & Culture track hosted eight sessions - with topics like how CRGs benefit business, how to manage burnout in the industry, and the skills you need in a world of automation – and we celebrated IDB in the Community Pavilion.

Celebrating women in legal technology

Now five years old, Stellar Women has flourished from a beloved podcast into a tight-knit Relativity community for women in legal tech. In 2023, over 500 participants attended Stellar Women events and tapped into this space dedicated to supporting one another.

“Stellar Women has created an environment that is welcoming, accepting, and inclusive. You are acknowledging and celebrating incredible women who have pushed through obstacles, both in their personal lives and careers, to reach the remarkable position they hold today.”

Deepening our investment in the future

Our existing partnership with Chicago Public Schools picked up steam this year with our investment in legal tech education at Corliss STEM High School. In March, we brought students into our Chicago office to learn about our company and network with other Relativians. In July and August, we piloted a four-week program for students to learn about e-discovery and RelativityOne and to gain skills that will help them establish a professional brand and cultivate social capital. In October, we gave the Corliss students a front row seat to our industry at Relativity Fest and offered them a VIP meet-and-greet with our judicial panel.

"We are truly building a career pipeline for students at all levels. I am very proud of the pathway that Relativity and Corliss STEM are building together."

Celebrating Progress

Belonging is more than an end goal — it’s a necessity, a journey that takes time and focused effort from our leaders and our employees. Over the next few years, we’ll continue to work every day to create an inclusive community, measure our progress, and ensure Relativity is a place where everyone belongs.
